Where granite cirques rise above emerald glacial lakes, the Pyrenean high country reveals itself in all its austere beauty. D'Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park sprawls across the Catalan watershed at altitudes between 1,600 and 3,033 metres, a landscape carved by Pleistocene ice into a labyrinth of U-shaped valleys, tumbling cascades, and over 80 alpine lakes that define the park's character. The terrain shifts dramatically with elevation: lower valleys support mixed woodlands of beech and fir that thin into subalpine scrub and grassland, while the high plateaux give way to bare rock and scree above the tree line. This vertical gradient concentrates a remarkable diversity of habitats within a compact area, each supporting distinct ecological communities. Small forest mammals exploit the dense woodland cover of the middle elevations, while the open alpine meadows and rocky slopes above sustain populations of mountain ungulates and the birds of prey that hunt them. Swift-flowing streams and cold-water lakes harbour specialized freshwater fauna adapted to high-altitude conditions, and seasonal movements of migratory songbirds through the valleys create dynamic wildlife spectacles during spring and autumn passage.
