This is a temperate landscape shaped by a Cfb climate — mild, humid and free of any true dry season — so the ground stays green through the year and the rivers and ponds fed by the surrounding plateaus rarely falter. Sandy soils and limestone outcrops give the terrain its quiet variety: damp valley floors, open hay meadows, thickets of scrub and stands of mature trees that together form a mosaic of habitats. That mosaic is what sustains the wildlife — woodland songbirds and small forest mammals in the denser cover, birds of prey hunting the field margins, bats working the tree lines at dusk, and a rich community of insects and amphibians in the wetter hollows.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal lies in the light and the seasons rather than in any single spectacle. Spring and early summer bring the meadows into flower and the woodland canopy into full voice, with dawn and the last hour before dusk the finest windows for watching and listening. Autumn softens the palette and draws migratory birds through the valley corridors, while winter strips the trees and opens up sightings across the open ground. Paths and quiet lanes thread the park, making it easy to move between habitats on foot and to work a hedgerow or a pond edge patiently. Bring long lenses and patience: this is a place to read the landscape slowly, letting the birds of prey, the songbirds and the small mammals reveal themselves on their own terms.
