This National Park protects a mosaic of Mediterranean woodland, riverside wetland, and open scrubland clinging to the ravine sides, where the humid microclimate around the falls sustains lush vegetation even during the warm summers characteristic of the region's humid subtropical climate. The park's permanent water courses and pools create a lifeline for small forest mammals and riparian species that depend on year-round moisture; birds of prey hunt along the gorge thermals, while waders and waterfowl exploit the river margins and quieter reaches. Dragonflies and aquatic invertebrates thrive in the cool, fast-flowing sections, their abundance supporting insectivorous songbirds and small raptors through all seasons. The stable, frost-free winters and adequate rainfall throughout the year, unusual for southern Croatia, allow the park's deciduous and mixed woodland to flourish alongside its karst formations.
Wildlife photographers flock here for the interplay of water, light, and stone—the morning sun catching spray at the larger falls creates conditions unmatched elsewhere in the region, while the enclosed gorge offers intimate wildlife viewing opportunities impossible in open terrain. Spring brings migrant songbirds and breeders back to the woodland canopy, while the river remains navigable for small boats that allow silent approach to wading birds and riparian mammals. Summer heat drives much activity to dawn and dusk, rewarding early risers with glimpses of foraging mammals along the banks; autumn sees resident species preparing for winter, and raptors passing through on migration add a dynamic element to the skies. The park's modest elevation and protected canyon aspect mean that even winter visitation can yield active wildlife, with the added benefit of reduced crowds and clearer air for photography. Accessible via well-maintained trails and boardwalks, the park combines ease of access with genuine wildness—a rare combination that has made it one of southern Europe's most rewarding destinations for naturalists seeking to photograph water-dependent wildlife in a working Mediterranean landscape.
