Teak and mixed hardwood canopy thins over sun-bleached slopes, while shaded ravines and seasonal watercourses hold moisture long after the monsoon retreats, feeding pockets of denser evergreen growth. This is not rainforest but a seasonal, fire-and-drought-adapted woodland, and its wildlife reflects that rhythm: small forest mammals slipping through leaf litter, woodland songbirds moving in mixed foraging flocks, raptors working the thermals above the escarpment, and ungulates and large herbivores tracking the green flush and the shrinking waterholes as the cool dry months bite. Insect life and fruiting trees pulse with the monsoon, then quieten, and the whole system reads as a study in restraint and timing.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the reward lies in that austerity. Winter's clear, low-angled light rakes across open canopy and dry grass, exposing texture, contour and animal behaviour that dense green foliage would hide; the same season concentrates wildlife around remaining water and makes tracking and quiet observation far more productive. Birders can work the woodland edge, the grassland and the rocky slopes in a single morning, reading functional groups rather than chasing a checklist — raptors on the updraughts, songbirds in the thickets, water-associated birds at whatever pools persist. Access is by road through the buffer country, with the best viewing on foot and by vehicle in the cooler hours after dawn and before dusk. Come expecting heat, dust and patience, and the landscape gives back in clarity.
