The Mediterranean climate here is warm and dry, with summer drought that leaves the landscape golden and spare—pine and cork oak woodlands cloak the slopes, punctuated by scrubland and rocky outcrops where water-worn streams cut through the mountains. This is habitat for birds of prey hunting the thermals above the ridges, small forest mammals moving through the understory at dawn and dusk, and a wealth of songbirds that exploit the mosaic of woodland edge and clearing. Reptiles and amphibians shelter in the rocky crevices and seasonal pools, their presence a gauge of the park's precious water cycles during the long, hot dry season that defines life here from June through September.
For the wildlife traveller, the park rewards both patient observation and active exploration. The dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the granite terrain offers exceptional opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography throughout spring and autumn, when water is more reliable and temperatures moderate the exertion of hiking steep trails. Birdwatchers should focus on the open ridges and clearings for raptors, and the denser woodland sections for resident and migratory songbirds—autumn and spring passages bring movement through the valleys that can sustain days of focused field work. Access is straightforward from the town of Cazalla de la Sierra, which serves as a natural base for exploring the network of trails that wind through the park's interior, offering both solitude and reliable opportunities to encounter the wildlife that has adapted to this austere, rock-bound landscape.
