This is a landscape shaped by a Mediterranean climate with a dry summer, so the vegetation reads as adaptation rather than abundance: holm oak and downy oak woodland on the deeper slopes, garrigue and scrub on the thin, sun-baked ground, and cooler, damper pockets in the ravines where ferns and mosses cling to seep lines. The park's ecological character is one of contrast — exposed, arid crests above, sheltered forest below — and that vertical variety is what concentrates life. Birds of prey work the thermals along the ridgelines, woodland songbirds and small forest mammals occupy the canopy and leaf litter, bats hunt the forest edges after dusk, and reptiles and insects exploit the warm, stony clearings. Nothing here is lush in the tropical sense; everything is frugal, tenacious and finely tuned to a summer that withholds water.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal lies in that austerity and the way light plays across it. Early morning and late afternoon rake the limestone, throwing the gorges into relief and pulling warm colour from the rock, while the dry-season haze softens the long views from the high ground. Spring rewards those who walk the trails before the heat settles, when the scrub is at its most active and resident and passage birds move through the woodland edge; autumn brings quieter, clearer air and good visibility for scanning ridges for soaring raptors. Access is on foot along marked paths, so the park favours patient, slow observation over the quick stop — carry water, start early, and let the terrain dictate the pace. The reward is a working Mediterranean ecosystem laid bare, where every species is legible against the stone.
