This is classic Cfb country: no dry season, rain spread generously across the year, and a mosaic of beech and fir forest, damp meadows, hedgerows and rocky slopes that stay verdant well into autumn. Streams and small rivers thread the terrain, feeding lush pasture and shaded woodland understorey. Ecologically, it is a place of layered habitats — canopy, edge, meadow and water — and the wildlife follows that structure. Woodland songbirds fill the tree layer, birds of prey work the thermals above the ridges, small forest mammals rustle through the leaf litter, and amphibians and aquatic invertebrates thrive in the permanently damp gullies. Nothing here feels arid or Mediterranean; the character is Atlantic-mountain, cool and moist, and the fauna reflects that abundance of cover and water.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal lies in that density and variety of habitat within a compact, walkable landscape. Early morning mist in the valleys and low, soft light filtering through beech canopy create the conditions wildlife image-makers chase; the long, mild shoulder seasons stretch the window for observation well beyond high summer. Birds of prey are best watched from open ridge viewpoints, while woodland species reward patience along shaded tracks and forest edges. Access is largely on foot via marked trails and quiet rural lanes, so the experience stays intimate and unhurried. Bring weatherproof layers — the year-round rainfall is part of what makes this place so alive — and plan around dawn and dusk, when the meadows and forest margins are busiest with activity.
