This is mountain country shaped by centuries of grazing and timber, where wooded slopes give way to open pasture and then to bare rock, and where water is never far away — streams thread the valleys year-round under a temperate climate with no dry season, so the greens stay deep and the undergrowth thick well into autumn. That layered structure of canopy, meadow edge and cliff is what makes the park so ecologically rich: woodland songbirds and small forest mammals occupy the timber, birds of prey work the thermals above the ridgelines, and bats and nocturnal mammals move between the trees and the open ground after dusk. The transition zones — hedgerows, forest margins, stream banks — are where the density and variety of life concentrate.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal lies in that proximity of habitats and in the quality of the light. Early mornings bring mist into the valleys and soften the forest edges, while clear autumn and winter days throw long, low light across the pastures and pick out texture in the bark and rock. Spring and early summer are the productive months for watching breeding activity and for the sheer volume of birdsong, and the absence of a dry season means the landscape stays workable and green across a long window rather than burning off by midsummer. Access is straightforward from Olette itself, with trails radiating into the surrounding slopes, so a visitor can move from valley floor to open ridge in a single day. Come equipped for mountain weather, move quietly along the forest margins, and let the habitat do the work — the reward is a park that reveals its wildlife patiently, in layers, to those who give it time.
