The park's terrain rises from sheltered valley floors to exposed granite ridges, and that vertical range, combined with a temperate Dfb climate of cool winters and reliably moist summers, produces a mosaic of habitats: humid ravines thick with ferns and mosses, open pasture maintained by grazing, and dense broadleaf canopy that holds moisture through the year. Wildlife follows the habitat rather than any single headline species. Woodland songbirds and small forest mammals occupy the canopy and understorey, birds of prey work the ridge lines and thermals above the valley, and bats hunt the insect-rich corridors along watercourses and forest edges. Amphibians and aquatic invertebrates thrive in the clean, cool streams, while the meadow margins support pollinators and the open-country birds that depend on them.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal lies in the light and the layering of the terrain. Early morning mist settles in the valley bottoms while the upper slopes catch first sun, giving a long window of soft, directional light that flatters forest edges and open meadows alike. Spring brings the loudest activity, with territorial songbirds and displaying birds of prey, while autumn delivers low golden light and the muted palette of turning broadleaf woodland. Access is largely on foot along waymarked trails that link villages and climb between terraces, so a slow approach rewards patience: sit at a forest edge at dawn, work a stream corridor quietly, and the resident birdlife and small mammals will resume their routines around you. Bring long lenses for raptors on the ridges and macro kit for the damp, fern-rich ravines.
