This is classic Mediterranean terrain under a Csa climate: summers arrive dry and bright, baking the garrigue and maquis into aromatic silver-green, while the wetlands shrink and concentrate their life into briny, shallow basins. The park's ecological character lies in that tension between arid hills and the water that lingers behind the coastal barrier — a patchwork of reedbeds, brackish pools, sandy shorelines and low woody hillsides. Wildlife follows the habitat rather than any single headline species: birds of prey ride the thermals above the ridges, woodland and scrub songbirds work the dense cover, migratory waders and waterfowl gather on the mudflats and salt pans, and small mammals, reptiles and amphibians make their living between the dry stone and the damp margins.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal is the sheer variety packed into a compact, walkable geography — you can move from sun-bleached ridge to reed-fringed lagoon in a morning. The light here is the Mediterranean kind that rewards early starts and late finishes: low, warm and raking across the salt pans, turning water and vegetation into graphic planes. Seasons dictate the show. Spring and autumn bring the movement of migratory waterbirds through the wetlands, when the shallow basins are at their most productive; summer strips the landscape to its bones and concentrates wildlife around remaining water; winter quiets the hills and settles waterfowl onto the open lagoons. Access is largely by marked trails and observation points, so a slow, patient approach — binoculars, a long lens, and respect for the fragile margins — is how this park is best read.
